Nice! I also wrote on encountering the Indians back in March (I experienced Mardi Gras in New Orleans about 12 years ago - just insane - and seeing the Indians in Treme was a highpoint).
That sounds amazing, I'll have to read that! I'd assumed that the Indians only appeared at Mardi Gras, so I had no expectation of seeing them at all when I went. Sometimes it feels like I dreamt this encounter, so I'm glad there are pictures!
The Indians used to only appear on Fat Tuesday and St Joseph's Day but in recent decades they've been absorbed into the wider New Orleans cultural tourism thing so you can see them often - the likes of Monk Boudreaux (former Wild Magnolia) play out in full costume regularly etc. I guess if you spend all year making a suit getting offered a paying gig to appear in such appeals!
